Charles Palmer Coombs, 86, of Davidson, NC died May 31, 2017. He was born on May 6, 1931 in Kalamazoo, MI to the late Palmer and Genevieve Coombs. He earned an engineering degree from the University of Colorado and was commissioned as an officer in the US Air Force, based at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH. His 33 year military and civilian career included flight testing generations of new aircraft and culminated as Chief Engineer of the ARIA program. In the following 31 years of retirement and with his wife by his side, he lived out his lifelong dream and sailing passion, as captain of the sloop L’Aventure, cruising from Maine to the Bahamas and many points between. When not at sea, he embraced lakeside living in Davidson, NC, piloting radio controlled aircraft with the RC Wingers, and serving with the Lions Club. Above all, his faith was in Jesus and he loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and friends.
Survivors include his wife Marcia Sugg Coombs; son, David and wife Rebekah of Keller, TX; daughter, Genevieve Primos and husband William of Johns Creek, GA; grandchildren, Stephen, William and Julia.

A memorial service will be held at 2 PM Sunday, June 4 in the chapel of James Funeral Home. A reception will follow in the community room of James Funeral Home. Burial will be private at Salisbury National Cemetery.
