Courtney Groome Scott, Wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt; Courtney lost her tenacious hold on life and departed from this world on February 21, 2017 after a long battle with a complex illness.
She was born in Hampton, Va., graduated from Hampton Roads Academy in 1969 and attended East Carolina University in the fall. After spending a few years working back in Hampton, Courtney relocated to Charlotte. She worked for Bank of America until 1984 when she accepted a management position at Creative Personnel. She ultimately became Director of Human Resources at the law firm of Kennedy Covington Lobdell and Hickman where she worked for sixteen years before retiring in 2006.
Courtney always had a big smile for everyone she encountered, and loved learning about her new acquaintances. She had an amazing ability to remember names and people’s stories due to her remarkable listening skills. She was a tireless worker for her church, LakeForestChurch in Huntersville where Courtney and her husband, Marshall Scott, were founding members. Together they traveled on a mission trip to India to visit an orphanage which they helped to sponsor. She volunteered with the USO, and was named Precinct Judge for the Board of elections in Charlotte.
Courtney had one son, Walter Geddy Fields IV, (wife,Kimberly). Her two granddaughters, Langley and Rylee Fields were her pride and joy. In Hampton, she leaves one sister, Sally Groome Powell (husband, Gary) and nephew, Charles Groome Powell (wife Kambeth) and their son, Grayson, who reside in Poquoson,Va.
In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to Hospice of Lake Norman, 705 Griffith Street, Suite 203, Davidson NC 28036. A Celebration of Courtney’s life will be held on Friday March 3rd at 4:00pm at Lake Forest Church, 8519 Gilead Road in Huntersville. Visitation will follow. James Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
